What is Channel Template
A channel template is a predefined file that shows how to format product information to upload it to a specific sales channel. These templates (usually CSVs you can download from the sales channel) show which fields are required or optional, and how your data should be formatted, like using euros instead of dollars or limiting decimal places. You can upload a channel template to Plytix (or choose from our pre-built ones), and Plytix will format your product information to match the template for you.

A brief history
Back in the early ecommerce days, selling products on an ecommerce channel meant manually typing your product information into each platform. If you wanted to import products in bulk, they had to be structured in the right way, so platforms started offering templates (normally CSV files) to help sellers structure their product information correctly.
As businesses started selling across more platforms, filling in multiple different templates with the same product information became a daily challenge. That’s when PIMs and feed management tools stepped in to make the process easier. Instead of filling in these templates manually every time, you could have one central source of truth, and the PIM or feed manager would use it to fill in the templates for you. They’d format your product information for each sales channel, and then generate a URL feed that linked to your ready-to-go product file. You could either paste the feed directly into the sales channel or download the file and upload it yourself.
Good to know
A channel template doesn’t just tell you what to include; it tells you how to include it. That might mean using specific value formats (like “USD” vs. “$”), selecting from allowed dropdown values, or following naming conventions.
In Plytix, you can customize your product information on export it to match these requirements. That means the master version you have in your PIM doesn’t have to change.
