What is Image Formatting
Image formatting is the process of saving, converting, or preparing an image file to meet particular needs or requirements. It’s about making sure the images you already have fit perfectly wherever you need to use them. It means resizing, cropping, compressing, and saving images in the right file types (like JPG or PNG) so they load quickly, look sharp, and fit perfectly wherever you use them.
A brief history
Traditional image formatting meant physically cropping photos or adjusting prints to fit catalogs or ads. When images moved online, formatting became about adjusting digital images for a variety of digital channels: resizing, compressing, changing file types, or adapting colors to make sure they loaded quickly and looked good on every device.
Today, with higher-resolution screens, faster networks, and diverse online platforms, image formatting is essential to deliver crisp, fast-loading visuals that build trust and meet channel requirements. And luckily for design teams, it’s now possible to format images automatically. Tools like PIMs and DAMs let you set rules for formatting images when you export them so you can send them as a PNG to one channel and a JPG to another.
Good to know
Every channel or platform has its own “rules” for images, like how big they should be, what file type to use, or how much detail to keep. Luckily, many product management tools (including Plytix) can help you automatically format your images for each channel when you export them, so you don’t have to store multiple versions of the same image in your PIM.
